While We Wait…

“But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.”
—Romans 8:25 (ESV)

Waiting can feel like a wilderness. It stretches us, humbles us, and often tests the very core of our faith. Whether it’s healing, restoration, a breakthrough, or the fulfillment of a long-awaited promise, the waiting room of life can be one of the hardest places to be. But while we wait for our dreams and hopes to materialize, we are invited to trust the living God—the One who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all we ask or think (Ephesians 3:20).

Even when we do not see the answers we long for, we are not without hope because we have eternity that is a sure promise. Hebrews 11 speaks of faithful men and women who “died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off…” (Hebrews 11:13, KJV). Their eyes were fixed on something greater, an eternal reward. Like them, we too must lift our gaze beyond the immediate and remember that God’s story doesn’t end here. Our glorious eternity awaits us, awaits all the faithful believers who love his appearing.

But while we are still here on earth, waiting can also develop strength and character in us. James 1:3-4 reminds us:

“For you know that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.”
—James 1:3-4 (NKJV)

As we wait, patience is doing a deep and holy work within us. It is not passive; it is purposeful. It builds character, deepens our dependence on God, and aligns our desires with his will.

There is blessing in endurance. There is reward for those who wait in faith. After we have been patient, we will see that God’s plan was always full of mercy and purpose.

Even more, we have this beautiful promise:

“But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”
—Isaiah 40:31 (KJV)

God strengthens us while we wait. He gives us grace not just to endure, but to rise, to run, and to soar in the power of the holy Spirit even in seasons of silence.

And I must pause here to say that as I write this post, it is also an encouragement for me. I am in a long season of expectation, waiting for prayers that have yet to be answered. This devotion is a reminder for me and an encouragement to anyone reading this that God is still good, still faithful, and still working even when we our situations have not yet changed.

Lastly, let us never forget this sobering yet hope-filled truth:

Hebrews 12:2

“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God”. (KJV)

So, we wait in patience not as those without hope, but as those who know the one endured, who holds time and who holds eternity in his hands.

Prayer:
Father, give us strength in the waiting. When answers feel far off, let your presence be near. Build in us the kind of faith that trusts even when we don’t understand. Thank you for the promise of eternity, and for the joy that is still to come. Teach us to wait well with patience, peace, and unshakable hope. Amen.

Grace, Peace and Calvary greetings!
